July 2010
While this is the final news update for this academic year, the website will continue to be updated during the summer holidays. Please remember to visit every now and again to catch up on the latest information, news and events.
Open Afternoon
It was a pleasure to see so many taking the opportunity to visit the school during the open afternoon to see at first hand the wide range of wonderful work undertaken by our children. The weather was perfect, giving children and their families the chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful school surroundings. We are also grateful to parents for returning the report comment slips.
Waterloo Partnership
As many will remember, a few years ago Miss Cain visited Waterloo in Sierra Leone in support of the Waterloo Partnership. Last month, Mr Moorhead from the Waterloo Partnership gave a presentation to the children providing an update on their work in Sierra Leone. During his visit, he was presented with a very large cheque to the sum of £730.00, which was raised by one of our pupils who undertook a sponsored walk of Scafell, the tallest mountain in England.
This inspired us to raise extra and much needed funds for the Waterloo Partnership by holding a World Cup Mufti Day. For a small donation, children came to school wearing sporty clothes. After school, we held a cake sale on the playground, while the Year 6 Dance Club and our Choir provided some fantastic entertainment. Once again, we were astounded by the generosity of our parents and pupils, both in their donations of money and cakes. A grand total of £429.00 was raised in aid of children living in Waterloo, Sierra Leone. We know this will make a very real difference to these children who are so much less fortunate than our own.
Year 4 Egyptian Day
The Year 4 Egyptian Day was a great success. Children and staff dressed in Ancient Egyptian themed clothing - as Mummies, Pharoahs, Archaeologists and even a few tourists! We were very fortunate to receive a visit from an experienced historian from Liverpool University who brought a range of genuine Ancient Egyptian artefacts for us to examine. Due to a re-organisation of the History curriculum, the Ancient Egyptian topic will be only be taught in Year 3 from next year.
Swimming Success
A huge well done to both Chloe Lock and Lois Martin for representing Crosby in the Sefton School’s Swimming Gala on Wednesday evening at Crosby Swimming Baths. Due to their outstanding performances, Crosby retained the title of Sefton School’s Champions. Lois has also qualified to swim in the 200m breaststroke at the National Age Group Championships – a tremendous achievement!
Uniform
Whilst we appreciate that we are nearing the end of term, it is important to maintain a good standard of uniform. At Forefield, we value our school uniform. A uniform helps create equality and unity fostering a sense of belonging to our school community. If families are struggling to meet the cost of uniform, help is available. Please contact Sefton Student Support on: 0151 934 3456 or simply drop into school to see Mrs James. All queries are dealt with in absolute confidence. Details of our school uniform can be found in the Useful Information section of this website.
Mum, I'm boooooored...!!!
While we all look forward to the summer holidays, sometimes we can find ourselves feeling like we have nothing to do. Here are just a few suggestions to keep you busy this summer.
Free & Active
Free & Active providing 'Places To Go, Things To Do' across Sefton is a popular holiday activity programme.
All of Sefton’s Leisure Centres and Youth Centres open up for children and young people aged 2 - 19yrs FREE of charge offering a range of fun holiday actvities. For more information, visit the Active Sefton website or click the Free & Active logo on the left. (Watch the online video closely and see if you can spot any of our pupils taking part in the activities.)
Tennis Coaching
Ben Saunders and his team of coaches are offering children the opportunity to have FREE tennis coaching sessions at Campion Tennis Club. There will also be summer tennis camps throughout August. Many of our children will already know Ben as he has been running an after-school Tennis Club at Forefield Juniors. If you are interested, please contact Ben on: 07843 38 43 46.
Summer Reading Challenge
If you are looking for a way to unwind after all that exercise, why not take part in the Summer Reading Challenge 2010? Children are asked to read six books from any Sefton Library in order to receive a special certificate and medal, which will be presented in school on our return in September. As an added bonus, children will also receive a special book bag from the library as a reward for reading two books, a glow in the dark wristband for reading four books and a hanging-mobile for reading six books. They will also be given a poster and stickers during the campaign. We commend this scheme to you and hope that our pupils will not only enjoy but also really benefit from participating. Further details are available from your local library or online at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk. There is also an interactive website for children, featuring games and activities as well as book reviews and other information. Visit www.spacehop.org.uk to join in the fun.
