At Forefield Junior School we want children to know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. Children will, throughout their time here, produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences in a multitude of ways. Lessons provide opportunities for children to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, understanding architecture and other art, craft and design techniques.

Art is taught through a ‘Learning Challenge’ curriculum. It builds on children’s skills and knowledge as they move through the school. Continuity and progression are built around the objectives, skills and knowledge laid out in the art curriculum. This has allowed us as a school to have greater autonomy over what to teach and how to teach the subject areas, whilst ensuring that the essential skills expected of each year group are still being covered. As the challenges are devised, new and exciting art projects can be planned.

Reading within the Art Curriculum

In today's information-driven society, the ability to read critically is essential for academic and career success. By teaching reading across the curriculum, we are equipping children in our school with a crucial skill that will facilitate learning across the breadth of the curriculum. Reading is not just about decoding words on a page, but also about comprehending and analysing information. By incorporating reading in Art lessons children are able to practise their reading skills in a variety of contexts. Effective reading in Art requires considering the unique perspective of the artist while also identifying enduring human traits and lessons. Reading is incorporated into art lessons through a variety of methods, including reading artist biographies, and teaching students to "read" and analyse visual art itself. This integration builds both visual and traditional literacy, enhances critical thinking and connects art concepts to a broader context, such as understanding emotions in art or exploring thoughts and ideas visually.
